Al shaab: Citizens have chosen the path of change and reform in an effort to end the daily suffering.
According to Libyan News Agency, Abdulhakim Al-Shaab, a member of the High National Elections Commission (HNEC), addressed the persistent challenges faced by Libyan citizens, highlighting their decision to pursue change and reform despite significant obstacles. These remarks were made during a press conference at HNEC’s media center, attended by key figures including the Chairman and members of the HNEC Board, the Deputy Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, and representatives from the United Nations Development Programme.
Al-Shaab reported recent criminal attacks on the West Coast Electoral Administration Office, the Zawiya office, and previously the Zliten office, which he described as attempts to undermine the Libyan people’s right to select their candidates. In response to these events, the Commission issued Decision No. (2) in January, establishing 63 electoral districts for the second group. Despite these efforts, elections have been suspended in 26 municipalities due to ongoing security concerns and governmental directives.
During the conference, Al-Shaab detailed that elections were conducted in 26 municipalities on August 16, but were postponed in seven others due to security incidents. These municipalities, including Zawiya Central, Zawiya North, Zawiya West, Sorman, Sabratha, and Bir al-Ghanam, are now scheduled to hold elections on August 23.
Al-Sadiq Al-Zakkar, Director of the Field Operations Department, shared insights into the voting process, covering polling station statistics and areas affected by the disruptions. Ashraf Hamouda, Director of the Commission’s Registration and External Operations Department, also provided an overview of voter and candidate registration, voter card distribution, and the critical role of the call center in supporting citizens throughout the electoral process.
