Baku: Libya fully understands the importance of building resilient cities and urban communities that preserve national identity, affirmed Mohammed Al-Menfi, President of the Presidential Council. He emphasized Libya's dedication to constructing more resilient, inclusive, and equitable urban spaces, supporting reconstruction efforts, and fostering communities that align with modern developmental needs.
According to Libyan News Agency, Al-Menfi delivered these remarks during the 13th session of the World Urban Forum in Baku, Azerbaijan. He highlighted Libya's focus on balanced urban development policies, sustainable urban planning, and infrastructure improvements, emphasizing the empowerment of local authorities in reconstruction efforts. Notable progress has been made in Libya's key regions, including significant infrastructure and housing projects in the east, west, and south, specifically in Derna following recent floods and western cities post-conflict, all attributed to the prevailing stability in the nation.
Al-Menfi assured Libya's full support for international endeavors aimed at creating safe and sustainable cities capable of withstanding crises, climate change, and economic challenges. Such efforts are seen as pivotal in fostering regional and international stability, ensuring developmental benefits for future generations.
He also addressed the global housing crisis, affecting billions amidst expanding social disparities, climate change impacts, rapid urbanization, and rising migration and displacement rates. Al-Menfi stressed that housing has evolved beyond a singular issue, becoming a crucial pillar of stability, development, and social security.
The Libyan leader underscored the significance of international dialogues facilitated by events organized by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) slated for 2026 in Baku, Nairobi, and China. These meetings highlight the necessity of advancing global conversations on urban futures and the practical translation of recommendations into policies and projects benefiting humanity and integrating development at its core.
