Zintan: The eighth meeting of the Preparatory Committee for National Reconciliation commenced today in Zintan, sponsored by the Presidential Council and the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), with support from the African Union. This meeting is part of the preparations for the Comprehensive Reconciliation Conference, a critical step toward fostering peace and stability in Libya.
According to Libyan News Agency, the meeting was attended by representatives from UNSMIL, the African Union, several ambassadors, and representatives from diplomatic missions and international organizations operating in Libya. House of Representatives member Abdul Salam Nasiya highlighted in his opening remarks that the meeting marks a significant milestone in the pursuit of peace. He pointed out that political reconciliation is essential for establishing national consensus and tackling contentious issues like arms control, the head of state position, local governance, income distribution, and citizenship.
Nasiya explained that these challenges can only be addressed by building trust through serious dialogue and genuine concessions, paving the way for national consensus within an inclusive project that leaves no one behind. This process is crucial for organizing presidential and parliamentary elections that are acceptable to all, ultimately leading to the establishment of a state based on institutions, law, development, justice, and equal opportunity.
He further stated that Zintan's role in hosting the meeting sends a clear message that Libya can overcome its differences with sincere will, shared resolve, and belief in the nation's unity and future. This meeting continues the series of previous gatherings held in various Libyan cities, with the seventh meeting taking place on September 18 in Tripoli.
During the previous meeting, Presidential Council Chairman Mohamed Menfi emphasized the importance of national reconciliation, noting that it is not solely an internal matter but also linked to the stability of Libya and the broader region. He asserted that reconciliation lies at the heart of the Presidential Council's national project, essential for building a unified, secure state grounded in the rule of law and respect for rights and freedoms.
Al-Menfi expressed confidence in the Libyan people's ability to overcome differences and unite around a common national project that promises peace, development, and prosperity for future generations. He urged continued efforts with a spirit of national and humanitarian responsibility to achieve a unified, stable, and prosperous Libya that actively participates in its regional and international environment.
