NEW YORK: The UN Security Council has decided to extend the mandate of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) for an additional three months, with the new deadline set for January 31, 2025. This decision was reached unanimously by council members today, Thursday, and includes a provision for an automatic extension of nine more months, contingent upon the appointment of a new UN envoy to Libya.
According to Libyan News Agency, the resolution reaffirms the legitimacy of the Libyan political agreement and the roadmap developed during the Geneva Forum. It also endorses the updated electoral laws created by the 6+6 Committee, which was established by the House of Representatives and the High Council of State. Additionally, the Security Council has emphasized the need for sanctions against individuals who pose a threat to peace in Libya. The council has urged the UN mission to facilitate dialogue among Libyan actors to prevent any escalation of conflict in the region.
