Zawiya: The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has strongly condemned the attacks on two field offices of the High National Elections Commission (HNEC) located in Zawiya and the western coast. These attacks, which took place yesterday, have been described as a serious assault on the electoral process and an attempt to undermine the democratic rights of the Libyan people.

According to Libyan News Agency, UNSMIL stated that these criminal acts threaten the ongoing municipal elections and the broader aspirations of the Libyan populace for democracy. The mission emphasized its firm support for the HNEC in fulfilling its responsibilities and urged security officials to provide essential support to ensure that Libyans can exercise their political rights without fear or intimidation.

The UN mission has called for a comprehensive investigation to identify and hold accountable those responsible for these acts. Furthermore, the mission has urged all relevant authorities and security institutions to take immediate action to protect electoral premises, staff, and materials, ensuring that Libyans can freely express their will in the upcoming elections.

UNSMIL also appealed to authorities across Libya to collaborate with the High National Elections Commission to resume elections in areas where they have been obstructed, highlighting the importance of restoring the democratic process as swiftly as possible.
