Tripoli: The 6+6 and Advisory Committees have reached an agreement to amend Libya's constitutional and legal framework to facilitate presidential and parliamentary elections with results that are widely acceptable.

According to Libyan News Agency, the decision came after a two-day consultative meeting sponsored by the Mission. This meeting is part of UNSMIL's ongoing consultations with various Libyan stakeholders, which are expected to culminate in the announcement of a political roadmap during the next Security Council briefing.

The members of the 6+6 Committee praised the recommendations issued by the Advisory Committee on May 5 and pledged to incorporate these into efforts to make electoral laws more enforceable. The Mission highlighted that the committees understand the importance of a comprehensive political settlement to enable elections. This involves amending the Constitutional Declaration, reviewing electoral laws to ensure electoral integrity, forming a unified government with a specific electoral mandate, and adopting both domestic and international guarantees to rebuild trust, particularly between the populace and political institutions.

The committees also stressed that the political settlement must include measures to bolster local governance, ensure electoral security, promote national reconciliation, and enhance transparency in spending while addressing corruption.
