Thai King Approves New Cabinet

King Maha Vajiralongkorn of Thailand approved on Saturday the formation of the new government led by Srettha Thavisin in a step towards resolving the months-long political crisis in the country.

In a press release, the Thai Royal Palace stated that the King had approved the new 34-minister cabinet, highlighting that Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has selected a qualified government to manage the country.

Thavisin will assume the position of Finance Minister in the new government. Anutin Charnvirakul, the former Minister of Public Health in the previous government, will serve as Deputy Prime Minister. Additionally, Gen. Patcharawat Wongsuwan, the brother of the ex-army chief who was closely involved in 2014's coup, has been appointed the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment.

The elections held in May 2022 led to a political crisis in the country when conservative parliamentary blocs refused to nominate a reformist candidate for the Prime Minister's position. This paved the way for the second-place party, Pheu Thai, to form a coalition government.
