Orlando Engages in Strategic Talks with Libyan Attorney General

Tripoli: Attorney General Saddiq Al Sour recently held a meeting in Tripoli with EU Envoy to Libya, Nicola Orlando, to discuss enhancing joint cooperation on several critical issues.

According to Libyan News Agency, the meeting focused on the EU’s support for the priorities of the Attorney General’s Office, specifically targeting the combating of oil, fuel, and human smuggling, as well as addressing corruption and money laundering. Orlando highlighted the significance of information-sharing with Operation EUNAVFOR MED ‘IRINI,’ especially regarding suspected oil and fuel smuggling, as a collaborative effort to tackle transnational organized crime.

The dialogue also covered strategies to improve prison conditions and ensure a thorough judicial review of detainees, emphasizing the importance of justice and human rights standards. Furthermore, the meeting underscored the necessity of promoting the justice system, starting with juvenile justice, and creating the right conditions for free and fair municipal elections nationwide, along with strengthening oversight institutions and accountability mechanisms.

Orlando expressed the outcome of the meeting positively, stating, “We agreed to deepen our effective partnership and stay closely engaged in the months ahead, in a way that serves stability and supports national institutions.”
