New York:Libya, representing the Arab Group, has called for a comprehensive agreement on nuclear disarmament, emphasizing the need for the complete elimination of nuclear weapons.
According to Libyan News Agency, the Arab Group highlighted the importance of establishing a nuclear and weapon of mass destruction-free zone in the Middle East. They stressed that emerging military technologies, especially artificial intelligence, should be fully controlled by humans and regulated under international law.
Abdullah Al-Atwi, Second Secretary at the Permanent Mission of Libya to the United Nations, delivered the statement on behalf of the Arab Group during the general debate of the Disarmament and International Security Committee at the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
The statement expressed regret over the restrictions affecting the participation of the State of Palestine's delegation and condemned the Israeli occupation's actions in the Gaza Strip and attacks on peaceful nuclear facilities. It also warned of the risks posed by Israel's refusal to join the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and its non-compliance with the International Atomic Energy Agency's safeguards, which threaten both regional and global security.
Furthermore, the Arab Group emphasized the right of states to use atomic energy peacefully and supported UN efforts to prevent an arms race in outer space, enhance cybersecurity, and regulate conventional weapons. The Group concluded by urging for binding security assurances against the use of nuclear weapons on non-nuclear states and called for renewed political commitment to reactivate the Conference on Disarmament, aiming for global peace and development.
