Faculty of Arts in Benghazi Hosts Symposium on Libyan Exiles During Italian Colonial Era

Benghazi: The Faculty of Arts at the University of Benghazi recently hosted Italian researcher Lucia Lorbano, who specializes in the study of Libyan exiles sent to Italian islands during the Italian colonial period. This event was part of the faculty's broader initiative to engage in scientific and academic discussions on historical and humanitarian issues pertinent to Libyan history.According to Libyan News Agency, the Dean of the Faculty, Ahmed Najm, explained that the faculty collaborated with the Department of History and other university departments to invite the Italian researcher. This collaboration aims to enhance academic research and foster an exchange of scholarly perspectives on shared historical issues. During the symposium, Lucia Lorbano presented an Italian viewpoint on the deportation of Libyans, which affected various segments of society, including children, women, and the elderly.Najm highlighted the involvement of Dr. Mustafa Al-Maryami in the symposium, who stressed the need for contin ued academic, media, and cultural attention to the fate of Libyan exiles. This includes exploring whether these individuals returned to Libya or integrated into Italian society. The Dean also noted that the deportations carried out by Italian colonial authorities represent significant human rights violations, comparable to the crimes of detention camps and repressive trials.
