Geneva: The Head of the Presidential Council, Mohammed Al-Menfi, met with the United Nations Secretary-General, Ant³nio Guterres, in Geneva, Switzerland, to discuss the developments in Libya's political process. The meeting aimed to further the international organization's efforts to support a comprehensive Libyan-led initiative focused on the unity, sovereignty, and stability of Libya's institutions. Present at the meeting was the Head of the Libyan Intelligence Service, Abdulmajid Ibrahim Abdulkarim.
According to Libyan News Agency, Al-Menfi reiterated that any enduring political resolution must be grounded in consensus among Libyan institutions and must uphold national ownership. He highlighted the necessity of avoiding selectivity, exclusion, or interference that could undermine Libya's sovereignty. He stressed that a sustainable solution must be implementable, legally sound, and based on a robust institutional foundation to prevent future divisions.
Al-Menfi praised the efforts to unify Libya's military forces through the Chiefs of Staff and the 5+5 Joint Military Commission, following the approved frameworks and relevant Security Council resolutions. This initiative aims to reinforce the ceasefire and establish a unified, professional military institution that remains uninvolved in political affairs.
The discussions also covered the role of the Presidential Council in narrowing the divide between the House of Representatives and the High Council of State. Al-Menfi's approach involves holding a referendum on contentious issues, with the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) backing all efforts to expand consensus and lay the groundwork for a comprehensive political process, as reported by the Presidential Council Chairman's media office.
The media office further conveyed that the UN Secretary-General expressed his approval of the Presidential Council Chairman's strategy, which emphasizes institutional consensus and prioritizes dialogue. Guterres underscored the importance of building on this approach in the forthcoming phase and reaffirmed the United Nations' commitment to supporting Libyan efforts in achieving a comprehensive political settlement and in securing stability and security in Libya and the surrounding region.
