African Union, European Union, and United Nations Reaffirm Commitment to Peace in Africa

New York: The leaders of the African Union, the European Union, and the United Nations convened at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on September 21, 2025, during the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly. This sixth trilateral meeting brought together influential figures including Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission; António Costa, President of the European Council; Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission; and António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, alongside senior officials from the three organizations.

According to European Union, the organizations collectively emphasized the importance of multilateralism in addressing present-day global challenges. They expressed concern over the increasing disregard for international humanitarian and human rights laws. In particular, they focused on peace efforts within Africa, stressing the urgent need to resolve the ongoing war in Sudan by enhancing collaborative support for a political dialogue aimed at an immediate ceasefire and lasting peace. Discussions also encompassed strategies to combat terrorist groups and foster reconciliation and development in the Sahel region.

Furthermore, the organizations reiterated their support for the United Nations' efforts to rejuvenate the political process in Libya and addressed migration issues through the African Union-European Union-United Nations Tripartite Task Force on the Situation of Migrants and Refugees in Libya. They endorsed international and regional peace initiatives in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, aligning with resolutions set by both the African Union and United Nations Security Council earlier in the year.

The communiqué also highlighted the ongoing commitment to the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia, calling for sustained financial contributions to ensure successful mission operations. The leaders exchanged insights on reviewing peace operations to better tackle emerging challenges across Africa and beyond and advocated for the implementation of Security Council resolution 2719 (2023) regarding the financing of AU-led peace support operations on a selective basis.

The organizations underlined their dedication to fostering enduring peace and sustainable development in Africa, aligning with both the African Union Agenda 2063 and the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Additionally, they acknowledged the strengthening partnership between Africa and Europe, anticipating further discussions at the upcoming African Union-European Union Summit in November 2025 in Luanda, Angola.
