UN Mission Engages African Ambassadors on Libya’s Political and Humanitarian Challenges


TRIPOLI: The United Nations mission in Libya convened a meeting with African ambassadors and representatives to deliberate on the ongoing political and humanitarian issues in the country. The discussions, led by Deputy Special Representatives of the Secretary-General Stephanie Khoury and Ines Tchoma, centered on breaking the political deadlock and addressing the needs of vulnerable populations, including refugees and migrants.

According to Libyan News Agency, Khoury outlined the key elements of the United Nations-facilitated political process, which aims to resolve the current impasse and facilitate national elections. This process is seen as crucial for establishing long-term stability in Libya, which has been mired in conflict and political fragmentation.

Tchoma briefed the attendees on the United Nations’ efforts to support development across Libya and provide humanitarian aid to refugees and irregular migrants. The discussions highlighted the importance of effective disarmament, demobilization, and rein
tegration initiatives, alongside improved border management strategies. Additionally, the meeting addressed the ongoing support needed for Sudanese refugees residing in Libya, emphasizing the necessity of comprehensive international cooperation to manage these complex challenges.
