Tripoli: The National Committee for Combating Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing held its first meeting of 2026 on Thursday, chaired by the Governor of the Central Bank of Libya, Naji Mohammed Issa. The meeting focused on discussing the implementation of the National Strategy for Combating Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing.
According to Libyan News Agency, the meeting saw participation from representatives of various governmental, judicial, security, and regulatory bodies. They gathered to review measures in preparation for the mutual evaluation process that Libya will undergo. The discussions highlighted the risks associated with the ongoing absence of a draft law specifically targeting money laundering and terrorist financing. This legislative gap poses a threat to the country’s compliance with international standards and recommendations, which could have serious repercussions on Libya’s financial and economic systems.
The bank emphasized that the committee is actively working to enhance preventive controls and safeguard the financial system. This effort aligns with the reform policy pursued by the Central Bank of Libya and the National Committee. Several decisions were made during the meeting to advance these objectives.
