Libyan House of Representatives Reaffirms Stance Against Resettlement and Naturalization

Tripoli: The Libyan House of Representatives (HoR) has reiterated its strong opposition to any initiatives, measures, or arrangements that could, directly or indirectly, lead to the resettlement or naturalization of foreigners, or any demographic changes affecting the population composition of Libya. The HoR emphasized the importance of protecting national sovereignty and preserving the country's demographic and cultural identity as fundamental principles that are non-negotiable.

According to Libyan News Agency, the HoR released a statement on its official page underscoring its rejection of resettlement and naturalization initiatives, citing Law No. 24 of 2023, which combats the naturalization of foreigners in Libya. The statement highlighted the HoR's disapproval of any agreements or arrangements, whether public or secret, that could result in a new demographic reality being imposed within the country.

The HoR further asserted that Libya should not become a ground for exporting crises or absorbing the consequences of international and regional policies. It firmly rejected any solutions or remedies that undermine the interests of the Libyan people, their national security, or social stability.

The statement also addressed the issue of irregular migration, acknowledging its complex security, humanitarian, and developmental implications. The HoR insisted that any approach to this challenge must respect national sovereignty and adhere to Libyan laws to protect the state's interests and prevent any unlawful permanent situations.

Furthermore, the HoR emphasized that the national priority should be addressing the challenges facing Libyan citizens, including providing housing for youth, creating job opportunities, improving basic services, and tackling the economic and social impacts of the country's crises.

The statement called on all executive, administrative, oversight, and security authorities to adhere strictly to Law No. 24 of 2023 and oppose any actions that could be seen as endorsing resettlement or naturalization projects that threaten Libya's national identity.

Reaffirming its stance, the HoR declared that Libya's sovereignty, the unity of its people, and national security are non-negotiable and that preserving national identity is a shared responsibility of all state institutions. The HoR insisted that the national decision-making power belongs solely to the Libyan people, and the national interest must remain the top priority.
