Geneva: Libya’s Undersecretary of the GNU-Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Expatriate Affairs, Emhamed Zidan, has underscored the critical need to tackle the root causes of illegal migration during the 115th session of the Board of Directors of the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The session, held at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva, brought together international delegations to deliberate on migration-related challenges and explore cooperation mechanisms.
According to Libyan News Agency, Zidan emphasized the significance of bolstering international collaborative efforts to devise comprehensive solutions to migration issues. He stressed the necessity of achieving a balance between upholding national sovereignty and respecting human rights. Zidan pointed out that addressing the underlying causes of migration, including armed conflicts, natural disasters, and economic crises, is essential as these factors contribute significantly to the displacement of millions globally.

idan shared Libya’s reservations concerning the UN General Assembly resolution titled “The Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration.” He highlighted the importance of states managing their borders in alignment with their national interests, while still adhering to humanitarian and legal standards.
In addition, Zidan advocated for the inclusion of Arabic as an official language of the IOM, citing its global relevance and the significant role that Arab nations play in migration issues. He reiterated Libya’s dedication to continuing its collaboration with international partners to improve migration management systems, stressing the importance of international solidarity in addressing shared challenges in this area.
