Tripoli: The European Union in Libya has reiterated its support for the full participation of Libyan women in peacebuilding, marking the 25th anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security. The event witnessed the presence of the Minister of State for Women's Affairs in the Government of National Unity, Stephanie Khoury, the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Libya, alongside a gathering of Libyan women and men from civil society organizations and security agencies.According to Libyan News Agency, the EU Ambassador to Libya, Nicola Orlando, emphasized in a tweet that the anniversary is an opportunity to renew the commitment to empowering women and promoting their effective participation in building peace and stability in Libya. He underscored that recognizing women as essential participants in the peace process is crucial for establishing good governance and sustainable development principles.The Ambassador praised the significa nt and increasing involvement of Libyan women in state institutions, highlighting their roles in security agencies, anti-narcotics units, and the Police Academy. He noted their demonstrated competence, leadership, and initiative in these areas.During the event, Libyan women shared inspiring stories of leadership and resilience, advocating for the swift adoption of a draft law to protect women from violence. They also called for their representation in the UN-sponsored political roadmap to bolster Libya's political process, as per the Ambassador's tweet.At the event's conclusion, the European Union reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Libyan women in their quest for equal participation, acknowledging their persistent efforts toward achieving inclusivity and sustainable peace in the country.
