Tripoli: The Chief of Staff of the Libyan Army and the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) emphasized the importance of resolving disputes through peaceful means, highlighting the need for respect for human rights and the rule of law. They also stressed the necessity to unify the military institution under a unified civilian authority.

According to Libyan News Agency, the meeting took place in Tripoli between Hannah Tetteh, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Libya, her Deputy for Political Affairs, and Lieutenant General Mohammed Al-Haddad, Chief of Staff of the Libyan Army and Chairman of the Truce Committee. During the meeting, Lieutenant General Al-Haddad briefed the UN envoy about efforts to consolidate the truce in the capital, expressing gratitude for the technical support and advice provided by the mission.

The mission confirmed that the meeting was a preparatory step for the upcoming Security Council briefing on Libya. It involved exchanging views on necessary steps to achieve elections, unify institutions, including military and security services, and end the successive transitional phases. Tetteh and Deputy Representative Khoury engaged with Haddad and the Security and Military Arrangements Committee on recent security developments in Tripoli since the May 2025 clashes.

The mission noted Tetteh's commendation of the committee's efforts in calming tensions and preventing further clashes. She emphasized the need for decisions that avoid provocation by Libyan actors, aimed at preventing violence, maintaining calm in Tripoli, and ensuring the safety of its citizens. The envoy agreed that fighting in the capital adversely affects public life and civilian safety, underscoring the necessity of dialogue to resolve security issues. The discussions also included the need to involve all security actors to advance security sector reform and restructuring in the western region as part of state-building efforts.
