Wadan: The residents of Wadan marked the 111th anniversary of the Battle of Qarat al-Tawza, a significant historical conflict that occurred in 1915 between Libyan resistance fighters and Italian forces.
According to Libyan News Agency, the local youth council of the Jufra municipality organized a commemorative event to honor the sacrifices and bravery of their ancestors. The event featured several speeches highlighting the resilience and courage of the Libyan fighters who, despite limited resources, managed to inflict considerable losses on the heavily armed Italian forces.
The celebration included equestrian displays, emphasizing the critical role horses played in the Libyan resistance battles. The event also featured the lighting of the torch of resistance, the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah in memory of the martyrs, and the laying of flowers to honor those from Wadan who fell in the fight against colonialism.
Youth representatives from various organizations, including the National Agency for Voluntary Efforts, the Tozeur Martyrs Camping and Summer Resort Center in Wadan, the Scout and Guide Troop, the Cultural Forum, the Wadan Heritage and Tourism Association, and the Tozeur Martyrs Equestrian Club, attended the event.
The program was enriched with a historical account of the Battle of Qarat Tozeur, a review of the heroic deeds of the ancestors, and performances by poets who recited patriotic verses. These recitations served to reinforce a collective pride in the historical struggle and a sense of belonging and loyalty to the martyrs’ sacrifices.
