Tripoli: The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has voiced significant concern over the rising tensions between the House of Representatives and the High Council of State regarding the restructuring of the Board of Directors of the High National Elections Commission (HNEC). This development is critical as it plays a pivotal role in the political roadmap.

According to Libyan News Agency, the Mission highlighted in a recent press statement that this escalation is occurring against the backdrop of a persistent failure to agree on the HNEC since the roadmap's inception in August 2025. The Mission expressed regret that, rather than seeking consensus on this longstanding issue, the two bodies are engaged in escalating actions that threaten to deepen institutional divisions.

The Mission has called for an immediate cessation of unilateral actions from both bodies and has held them accountable for any division that might compromise the HNEC's future functionality. UNSMIL pointed out that the HNEC has been one of the few national institutions to maintain unity and demonstrate technical competence in election management.

Additionally, the UN mission urged the High National Elections Commission to preserve its neutrality to protect its integrity amidst the dispute. It reaffirmed its willingness to assist both councils in resolving the dispute and pledged continued collaboration with the current Board of Commissioners to advance presidential and legislative elections on a robust electoral framework.
