UN Mission Supports Results of Libyan Municipal Elections

Tripoli: The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has expressed its support for the recent announcement of municipal election results by the High National Elections Commission (HNEC). The results pertain to 34 municipalities that took part in the second round of municipal council elections, which were completed on August 16 and 23, 2025. UNSMIL has urged all relevant authorities to eliminate barriers hindering the conduct of elections in other municipalities yet to hold theirs.According to Libyan News Agency, UNSMIL also acknowledged the announcement of results for the Shwerif municipality. These results had been on hold since the initial round of municipal council elections conducted in November 2024. The mission praised the dedication and professionalism demonstrated by the HNEC in advancing the electoral process as per its mandate.UNSMIL continues to call on all authorities to ensure that any impediments to holding elections in the remaining municipalities are removed. It emphasizes that al l Libyan citizens should be able to exercise their political rights and participate in electing their local government representatives. The mission highlighted the importance of elections in building trust and ensuring accountability between citizens and legitimate local authorities.
