UN Mission Demands Probe into Detention and Death of Libyan Activist


Tripoli: The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has called for a transparent and independent investigation into the arbitrary detention and death of Libyan activist Abdel Moneim Al-Mariami. The mission expressed shock and sadness over the incident and urged authorities to look into the circumstances surrounding his demise.



According to Libyan News Agency, Al-Mariami was reportedly abducted by the Internal Security Agency in Sorman on June 30. He was later referred to the Public Prosecutor’s Office on July 3 and was pronounced dead on July 5. The details of his death remain unclear, prompting UNSMIL to demand a thorough investigation.



The mission has extended condolences to Al-Mariami’s family and condemned the threats, harassment, and arbitrary arrests that target politically active individuals in Libya. UNSMIL reiterated its call for authorities to respect freedom of expression and to cease unlawful arrests.
