The United Nations Support Mission in Libya welcomed the announcement by the High National Elections Commission of the date for holding the upcoming municipal council elections in 58 municipalities across the country on November 16, considering these elections an important step towards strengthening local governance and democratic practice in Libya.The mission praised in a press statement the efforts of the High National Elections Commission to reach this important entitlement and urges all Libyan authorities, political leaders and security actors to provide a safe, transparent and inclusive environment for holding the elections.The mission stressed in its statement, which it published on its official page today, Tuesday, that it is of utmost importance to ensure the right of registered citizens, especially women, to freely vote to choose their representatives at the local level, and to enable local observers to supervise the electoral process impartially.The mission also urges all candidates to engage in their electoral campaigns with integrity, and to adhere to the principles of fair electoral competition as stipulated in the regulations and code of conduct developed by the High National Elections Commission.The mission also called on candidates, media representatives and social media users to refrain from incitement and hate speech, and to treat the municipal council elections as an opportunity to contribute positively to building democratic governance in Libya.At the end of its statement, the mission reiterated its commitment to supporting the aspirations of the Libyan people and supporting efforts aimed at completing the electoral process successfully.Source: Libyan News Agency
