Tetteh Engages Western Region Movement to Address Libya’s Political Stalemate

Tripoli: Special Representative of the Secretary-General Hanna Tetteh and Deputy for Political Affairs Stephanie Koury met yesterday with 15 members of the Western Region Movement, including mayors from various municipalities, to discuss the Advisory Committee’s work and strategies to overcome the political deadlock.

According to Libyan News Agency, the participants offered proposals for a consensual roadmap, highlighting the need to unify military and security institutions under a unified Libyan government with effective control across the country. Concerns were raised about the proliferation of weapons and military build-up, which pose risks to civilian lives. A community leader, representing 143 mukhtars from 11 western municipalities, expressed a strong desire for peace and called for dialogue among all parties to resolve conflicts.

Tetteh reaffirmed UNSMIL’s commitment to supporting de-escalation efforts to prevent violence and to develop a roadmap toward elections and unified institutions.
