Misrata: Protesters in Misrata have taken to the streets to demand the immediate removal of weapons depots from residential areas following a recent explosion at an ammunition depot in the Sakirat area. Demonstrators gathered Friday evening near the site of the explosion, voicing concerns over the safety of residents in the city and its neighboring areas.
According to Libyan News Agency, the demonstrators issued a statement calling for the relocation of ammunition and weapons storage sites to ensure the safety of citizens. The statement praised Decision No. 390 of 2025 by the Deputy Minister of Defense, which mandates the evacuation of such storage sites from residential neighborhoods and non-army buildings. The protesters urged prompt implementation of this decision to prevent future disasters.
The demonstrators also held responsible parties accountable for the explosion that occurred last Sunday night, calling for an investigation and accountability for those involved. They stressed the need for legal and preventative measures to protect residents from similar incidents and highlighted the crime of storing ammunition in residential areas as a violation of local and international laws and human rights.
Participants in the protest, speaking to a WAL correspondent, emphasized the need for authorities to assess and document the material damages suffered by affected citizens. They called for compensation and urged that injured individuals receive treatment abroad, with a focus on ensuring the rights of people with disabilities.
In a related development, Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dabaiba visited the injured on Friday evening, pledging to provide necessary medical support promptly.
