Jeddah: The 4th Global High-Level Ministerial Conference on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), held here on November 15-16, has culminated in the approval of the Jeddah Commitments, which mark a significant step forward in the global fight against antimicrobial resistance, a critical threat to public health, food security, and sustainable development.According to Saudi Press Agency, the conference, under the theme "From Declaration to Implementation", brought together ministers, health experts, and stakeholders from around the world to address the urgent need for coordinated action to combat AMR. Minister of Health Fahad Al-Jalajel expressed that the commitments advance the global AMR agenda with impactful actions, emphasizing the urgency of immediate action.Al-Jalajel highlighted that these commitments serve as foundational elements for member states and international bodies to effectively combat AMR, aligning with decisions made at the United Nations. The Jeddah Commitments build on the Political Declarati on on AMR adopted at the 79th United Nations General Assembly High-Level Meeting, aiming to transform political will into actionable steps.The commitments focus on strengthened governance, enhanced surveillance and stewardship, capacity building, research and development, and public awareness through educational initiatives. They underline the importance of international cooperation and the role of the Quadripartite Joint Secretariat on AMR in supporting governments.The commitments also propose the establishment of a Biotech Bridge to advance research, development, and innovation in biotechnological solutions to AMR. Al-Jalajel announced the creation of an AMR One Health Learning Hub and a Regional Antimicrobial Access and Logistics Hub in Saudi Arabia, aimed at fostering global collaboration and improving access to essential antimicrobials and diagnostics.He called for expanding the "coalition of the willing" to include a broader community against AMR and announced Nigeria as the host of the 5th Global High-Level Ministerial Conference on the issue. To maintain momentum, Al-Jalajel proposed a troika system to drive action and implementation through 2025 and 2026 until the next Ministerial Meeting.The troika system, a mechanism to enhance collaboration between former, current, and future hosts, is a key outcome of the Jeddah Meeting, set to sustain momentum and action into the 5th Ministerial Meeting in 2026. The meeting concluded with a call to action for all member states to honor their commitments and aim for the 2030 goals outlined in the UNGA Political Declaration on AMR.
