Rome: The Libyan Embassy in Italy has organized a humanitarian visit for Libyan families to meet their relatives detained in Italian detention centers in Palermo. This initiative marks a significant effort to strengthen familial bonds under challenging circumstances.
According to Libyan News Agency, the embassy coordinated directly with Italian authorities to ensure the visit was conducted under appropriate conditions, emphasizing the humanitarian and social needs of both the detainees and their families. Counselor Ibrahim Balaou from the embassy’s consular section and embassy employee Khaled Ambia accompanied the families, facilitating procedures and overseeing the visit’s logistics on-site.
The embassy highlighted that this initiative is part of its continued commitment to addressing the humanitarian aspects of Libyan detainees’ situations. It underscores Libya’s dedication to protecting its citizens’ rights abroad and maintaining family connections despite the difficulties posed by detention.
Furthermore, the embassy is actively communicating with Italian authorities to expedite the enforcement of an agreement regarding the transfer of sentenced individuals. This agreement, signed in Palermo on September 29, 2023, aims to allow detainees to serve their sentences in Libya, further supporting familial and social connections during incarceration.
