Istanbul: The Libyan parliamentary delegation to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), led by First Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives (HoR) Fawzi al-Nuwairi, actively participated in the election of the IPU Secretary-General. This significant event took place during the closing session of the 152nd Assembly and the 217th Governing Council meeting, held in Istanbul, Turkey.
According to Libyan News Agency, spokesperson for the HoR, Abdullah Blihaq, detailed that the closing session featured several pivotal activities. These included the presentation of the final document of discussions and the adoption of resolutions, alongside reports from the standing committees to the Assembly. In his role as Chairman of the IPU Standing Committee on UN Affairs, al-Nuwairi presented the committee's final report, emphasizing its key discussions. These discussions focused on the role of the UN Resident Coordinator and his team in enhancing collaboration with governments and parliaments.
The Assembly further deliberated on a proposed amendment to the UN Charter, which was submitted by a civil society coalition under the title "Article 109: Renewing the UN Charter." Additionally, the Assembly explored ways to empower the organization to tackle current challenges and elected new members to the committee's bureau. The Governing Council's work included presentations on human rights and reports on the activities of other committees and bodies.
The Libyan parliamentary delegation also included Sultana Al-Mismari and Dr. Rabia Abu Ras as members, highlighting the nation's commitment to active participation in international parliamentary affairs.
