Nairobi: Libya has taken over the presidency of the Council of African Ministers of Environment for the upcoming two years. The Minister of Environment in the Government of National Unity, Dr. Ibrahim Al-Arabi Munir, officially assumed the role during the 20th session of the Conference of African Ministers of Environment (CAMEN) held in Nairobi, Kenya. The event saw the participation of environment ministers, African country representatives, and members from regional and international organizations.
According to Libyan News Agency, Libya will lead the council for the 2025-2026 session, taking over from Ethiopia, the previous chair. This leadership transition presents an opportunity to bolster African collaboration on shared environmental issues, particularly regarding climate change adaptation and the sustainable management of natural resources.
In his initial address as chairman, Dr. Munir stressed the critical need for unified African efforts to tackle the escalating environmental challenges. He reiterated the commitment of African nations to collectively advance towards a sustainable and resilient future in the face of climate adversity.
The session also involved discussions on the African group's strategic preparations for upcoming international conferences and meetings. These include the Climate Change Summit in Brazil slated for late October, the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands in Zimbabwe scheduled for the second half of 2025, and the Minamata Convention on Mercury Summit, which will convene in Geneva before the end of 2025.
