Libya Advocates for Syrian Sovereignty at UN Meeting

New York:Libya, representing the Arab Group, has affirmed its steadfast commitment to the sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity of Syria. It emphasized that the Golan Heights is occupied Syrian territory and demanded Israel's immediate, complete, and unconditional withdrawal from this region, as well as from all Syrian territories where its forces have entered. The statement condemned Israeli aggression and foreign interference in Syria.

According to Libyan News Agency, this declaration was made by Taher El-Sonni, Libya's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, on behalf of the Arab states during the monthly Security Council briefing on Syria held at the UN headquarters.

The Arab Group praised the Syrian government's efforts to enhance stability and avoid regional conflicts. It also welcomed the collaboration between Syria, the United Nations, and its agencies, along with coordination with the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.

The Group voiced its support for initiatives to combat terrorism and eradicate the remnants of ISIS, while recognizing national actions related to transitional justice, missing persons, and national reconciliation.

In addressing the humanitarian situation, the statement highlighted the return of around 1.8 million Syrian refugees and over two million internally displaced persons to their homes. It urged more international investment in infrastructure, basic services, and livelihoods, as well as increased demining efforts to ensure a voluntary, safe, and sustainable return. Additionally, it called for greater international support for countries hosting Syrian refugees, promoting shared international responsibility and mitigating the challenges of hosting these populations.
