EU Applauds Removal of Ghadames Old Town from UNESCO Endangered Sites List


Tripoli: The EU has expressed approval of the removal of Ghadames Old Town from the UNESCO endangered sites list. This development is viewed as a key milestone that highlights Libya’s efforts in safeguarding its cultural legacy and fostering sustainable development practices.



According to Libyan News Agency, the Head of the EU Mission to Libya, Ambassador Nicola Orlando, conveyed his enthusiasm through a tweet. He remarked, “Great news from Libya: Ghadames Old Town has been removed from the UNESCO endangered sites list-a testament to Libya’s dedication to preserving its cultural heritage.”



Orlando further elaborated that the EU is proud to have contributed to this achievement via UNDP Libya’s solar lighting project, which aims to enhance tourism and stimulate the local economy while maintaining the town’s distinct character. He emphasized the continued collaboration with Libyan partners to protect the country’s rich heritage, which serves as both a legacy for humanity and a catalyst for sustainable economic growth.



Ghadames, renowned as the “Pearl of the Desert,” is among the oldest desert cities in North Africa and has held the status of a World Heritage Site since 1986.
