Arab Parliamentary Union Backs Libyan People’s Call for Prompt Elections


Algiers: The Arab Parliamentary Union has declared its support for the Libyan people’s demand to hold elections at the earliest opportunity, as part of efforts to stabilize Libya through a dialogue led by Libyans themselves, free from any foreign interference.



According to Libyan News Agency, this affirmation was made in the closing statement of the 38th Conference of the Arab Parliamentary Union, which was hosted in Algiers. The conference saw participation from a delegation of the Libyan House of Representatives, led by First Deputy Speaker Fawzi al-Nuwairi.



The conference also reiterated its longstanding commitment to the Palestinian cause, emphasizing that it remains a central issue for the Arab world. The statement underscored the Arab Parliamentary Union’s opposition to ongoing Zionist actions against the Palestinian people.



During the closing session, a spokesperson for the House of Representatives highlighted the review of committee reports and recommendations. The session also included discussions on the draft work program and the proposed budget for the General Union in 2025.



Additionally, the Arab Parliamentary Excellence Award was presented to Dr. Ahmid Houma, former Second Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and Minister of Defense, honoring his service and contributions during his tenure.



The Libyan delegation at the conference, led by Fawzi al-Nuwairi, included MPs Al-Saleheen Abdul Nabi, Hassan al-Barghouthi, Aisha Shalabi, and the Head of the House of Representatives’ Bureau, Abdullah al-Masry, alongside Dr. Ahmid Houma.
